it is painful just watching the US army training their Air Force Pararescue. it's physically very demanding and meant to play one's mind. it's a psychological warfare. their rationale? you have be tougher than the best to save the best soldiers out there fighting the war. as expected, not much can pull through this training. of 120 trainees, 18 were left by the 5th week. celine jokingly asked me "what if they're mentally sick by the end of this training?". yes. it is a valid question. its scary. it makes me reflect on nursing. how we think we try to save people, to make people's life better but after working, dealing with difficult situations, can we still be sane. nursing is physically demanding to some extent but above all, it's a battle of the mind, us fighting against busyness and tiredness and still see our patients as a fellow human and not just a task. are some of us already mentally sick? am i to some extent mentally sick as well? maybe the answer lies within the Air Force Pararescue's motto. "so that others may live". i guess no one can really keep the passion(be in pararescue team or nursing or any other job) if we only think of ourselves. i've come to realise my greed can consume me, my priorities make me feel unhappy about work, i cant seem to find joy in meeting other people's needs, etc. but things would change if i think for others. if my sole aim in work is so that others may live, things might be different. |
